RECOGNITIONS AND ACCREDITATIONS

The Washington University of Barbados received permission to establish a school of medical sciences from the Government of Barbados in 2016. The Washington University has since been recognized and accredited by numerous organizations such as:

Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, the Government of Barbados (previously Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, METI)

The Ministry is primarily responsible for the formulation of educational policies, and the administration and regulation of education programmes. Currently, the educational system in Barbados caters to almost 60,000 students annually. Under the ministry there are 136 institutions designed to satisfy the needs of the diverse population.

Medical Council of India (MCI)

The Medical Council of India was established in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933. The main function of the Council is to establish uniform standards of higher qualifications in medicine and to recognize medical qualifications in India and abroad. The Council facilitates reciprocity with foreign countries as it relates to the mutual recognition of medical qualifications.

World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization (WHO) aims to “build a better and healthier future for people all over the world”. In its early years, WHO recognized the need for a reliable list of all of the world’s medical schools in order to document where the world’s doctors were educated. The first edition of the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools was published in 1953. The World Health Organization’s World Directory of Medical Schools has now been transferred to the new World Directory of Medical Schools, which is an amalgamation of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).

Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER)

FAIMER is a non-profit foundation committed to improving world health through education. The Educational Commission established FAIMER in 2000 for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®). FAIMER collaborates with ECFMG to promote excellence in health professions worldwide through educational medical programmes and research.

Global Alliance For Medical Education (GAME)

The Global Alliance for Medical Education, Inc. (GAME) is a non-profit organization in the State of Connecticut. The Corporation exists to promote lifelong learning through the provision of resources for healthcare professionals. GAME also aims to improve patient care internationally.

International Medical Education Directory (IMED)

The International Medical Education Directory (IMED) now the World Directory of Medical Schools, is a joint venture of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). The World Directory of Medical School manages the list of all the medical schools in the world, with accurate, current and comprehensive information on each school.

Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME)

“CAME is an organization of medical educators for the promotion, advancement and recognition of excellence in medical education.” CAME aims to promote excellence in all aspects of medical education. By utilizing networking and scientific activities, CAME facilitates research in medical education and supports the development of education and faulty.

Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE)

The Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) is a worldwide organization with members in 90 countries on five continents. Members of AMEE include educators, researchers, administrators, curriculum developers, deans, assessors, students and trainees in medicine and the healthcare professions. AMEE aims to promote international excellence in medical education amongst medical professionals in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education.

The World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, which aims to enhance the quality of medical education worldwide by working with doctors, educators and universities worldwide.

International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE)

IAMSE is a nonprofit professional development society, which is organized and directed by health professions educators, whose goals include promoting excellence and innovation in teaching, student assessment, program evaluation, instructional technology, human simulation, and learner-centered education. IAMSE believes that science must continue to be the basis for the practice of modern healthcare.

Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE)

The Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professional Educators (ANZAHPE) was formed in 1972 as the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education (ANZAME), by a small band of medical educators striving to develop medical education as a scientific discipline. These early members were mostly from medical schools and shared the view that teaching should be student-centred.

Association of Standardized Patient Educators(ASPE)

Howard Barrows, a neurologist, discovered in 1963, that a layperson could be trained to simulate illnesses. These laypersons would then give feedback to medical students about their history and communication skills and interact with them in assessment contexts. In 2001, the Association of Standardized Patient Educators was formed in order to support this new methodology and to foster the growth of the medical profession.

Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN)

The MDCN is a leading medical regulatory authority in Africa. It determines the standards of knowledge and skill of persons invested in this sector and maintains a register of persons who have achieved the entitlement to practice in the areas of medicine and dentistry.

Closely affiliated with the World Health Organization, WMA aims to promote the health and well-being of physicians and patients worldwide. Formally established in 1947, it is an international and independent confederation of approximately 114 professional medical associations, and more than 10 million physicians.
